Breathwork

Box breathing or four-square breathing is not a traditional breath control technique (pranayama) that you'll find in the yoga texts. However, I was guided through this form of breathwork before a class once and found it to be another great option to utilize in your breathwork practice. Essentially, you are imagining the breath moving around a box for a series of four counts along each side. In this video, I demonstrate exactly how it's done. This breath control technique can be done before or after your physical (asana) yoga practice. It can also be performed whenever you desire to simply calm the mind. It is always best to practice breath control on an empty stomach to avoid any extra pressure on the lungs.
