Tension in the neck and shoulders can creep up on you without you even realizing it. We live in a world now where we are constantly hunched over computers, typing often on keyboards and texting, with our shoulders shrugged up. Some may even hold their phone in between the ear and shoulder while trying to multi-task with other things. This also causes tension in this area to build up. In this yin class, we work to release all of the tension and stress that has been hanging out here.
In yin yoga, poses are held for longer periods of time: targeting the deepest layers of the connective tissues, bones, joints, fascia, etc. This stillness not only improves our flexibility, but it also invites us to connect more deeply with our body and our breath. While vigorous movement is nice and needed, yin yoga balances out our yoga practice. Not all poses in yin are meant to be comfortable. This is the beautiful part of the practice: using those uncomfortable moments to sink deeper in our breath, fully let go, and allow the body to gradually open up.
Be sure to have your favorite props on hand for this practice: blocks, straps, etc.
